The Truth About The Cargo Van Biz

Today was a phone call type of day.

El Cargo Boss Hotline was blowing up.

I felt like a Mobile call center. I spoke to at least 10 different people...

Two conversations stuck out to me the most.

First with RWS Express (My cousin). By the way, that's a secret to surviving long drives. Have plenty of valuable conversations on the phone.

Next thing you know. BOOM you are 10 minutes from delivery and made a easy 500 macaroonis.

RWS Express shared a funny story about how a guy he is mentoring is struggling with yesterdays email.

PANIC BOOKING

If you actually want to make money in this business, You definitely have to Master the art of overcoming panic booking.

That dude was going to places like IOWA. Lol ain't nothin out there Bud....

But my next conversation was Papa Freight. OG in this game with 15 years of experience in the Cargo Van and Box truck business.

One thing I love about the OG's- They have stories for days.

This dude was telling me about his friend who partnered with amazon. And one of his drivers decided to shoot another driver in a road rage incident(Are you kidding me? You would shoot someone while on the job).

Lol I don't need anyone like that in my business.

But Here is the Gold from PAPA FREIGHT:

He said that "Most business's don't even get to the 5 year mark".

How in the World Did You Make IT?

  1. Cut Expenses — Profit isn't what you earn, it's what you keep. Most operators bleed out in year two not from lack of loads, but from lifestyle creep and fixed costs they never audit.
  2. Invest In Conferences — The room is the product. One relationship from the right event is worth more than six months of cold outreach. This business still runs on who knows you. If you want to skip the line in Winning Relationships that make You profitable in this business in Any State, consider using THE UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. (I find it funny that everyone hates on Fox Carriers, yet they hosted a broker carrier conference recently. THAT ALL THE HATERS WERE AT).
  3. Master the Skill of SalesLoads don't chase vans. The operators still standing in year five know how to get on a broker's short list, negotiate rates, and keep Clients calling them back first.
  4. Invest Your Profits into Assets- lol this is my own but i do think this sets people a part. The negative of this business is that is time heavy. So we need assets to make us money while we sleep.

If you made it to year 5, respond back to this email on what needs to be added to this list. Your input is valuable.

Thanks,

PS — A Cargo Van Insider told me they want to hear more about business credit in these emails. I will honor his request although that is not my area of expertise. I will learn with you all. Enjoy your night my friend.

Yesterday definitely didn’t go as planned... After playing basketball 🏀 in Tallahassee, every load I saw was going the opposite direction. Halo(my son) was calling my name. I can see his smile in my head. My wife needed my help. Or she would be cooked at her job the next morning. Should I Choose the Cheese(Money) or Family? Which one did you think I chose? OF COURSE MY FAMILY! I would do anything for them. So i deadheaded home…. Got home at 3am. No rest. I was Exhausted. Only for my Family....

This Cop must of been bored. I’m on I-10 doing my usual 65 MPH. This dude said I passed the agricultural inspection. Mind you I’m heading to Destin Fort Walton Beach Florida to drop my load off. 439 miles for $809. TOTALLY GOD! But this guy said a “Agriculture Inspection”. Since when Cargo Vans needed inspections? Did you know in the Bible, God says this command in different ways…. “DO NOT BE AFRAID” 365 times. Why? He knew we would struggle with FEAR. That’s one scripture for every day of the year. Powerful. Till this day, I can’t lie to you… There’s this deep feeling when you are waiting for loads but can’t seem to win one. It becomes a rabbit hole. Now I’m not going to make this Van payment, insurance payment, business expenses etc. Then it gets worse. Will I even feed my family? I suck as a man if...
